The dinner table is set…food is on the stove…the children have finished their homework.
The husband comes home from work…hugs and kisses his bride…embraces the children as they run to up to him…and the FAMILY sits down to eat supper.
After eating, the children help clear off the table, then the husband and wife do the dishes while the children go upstairs to play.
Later that evening, the children head to bed after their baths, and Mom and Dad, snuggle on the couch, watching the fire in the fireplace, as they talk about their day.
Fast Forward 60 years!
Mom leaves work…frazzled by the day’s events…with her mind screaming about the things going on at home, swings by the day care/baby sitter’s house to grab the kids and rushes in the door at home to find the teenagers in their rooms with their ear buds in, watching and listening to SOMETHING all the while, wearing out their phones on text, Snap Chat and other social media apps.
The yelling begins to get the teenagers attention, as Mom tries to occupy the little kids with a DVD, while she’s either throwing something in the microwave or ordering Domino’s Pizza for supper. Mom has 4 kids, TWO OF WHICH are from different fathers, AND IF, there’s a man in the house, there is a HUGE chance, that Mom is NOT married to him, and he is NOT the father of ANY OF the children…and yet he has 2 children of his own…from one or two different women.
The teenagers leave their bedroom fortresses long enough to grab pizza and return to the ‘security’ of their rooms, all the while, NEVER removing the ear buds, and continuing their conversations on Text and Snap Chat.
The kids are now screaming because the DVD is over, so Mom quickly tries to occupy them, while at the same time doing her best to get them to eat THEIR PIZZA, while Dad…or the man in the house…is busy working the TV remote trying to find SportsCenter, some sporting event, or the latest episode of INK MASTER.
IF conversation between the man and the woman happens, then the subject matter is a buffet, that consists from accusations of this or that all the way to ‘we’re behind on our bills’.
And the crying of the baby can be heard in the background.
But in Mark 12:31, Jesus said that…
“the second (commandment, like the First one), is this: You shall love your neighbor…the one/ones CLOSEST or NEAREST TO YOU, as yourself!
He said…”There is NO OTHER COMMANDMENT greater than these.”
So…HOW…HOW in the world, with life coming at you like a tidal wave…can we do that?
This past fall, we had a power message series we called, ‘Neighbors’. In this series, we took a very deep look into Mark 12:31. Our #3 Most Downloaded Sermon of 2017 is Week #2 in our ‘Neighbors’ series. With 483 total downloads, here is “HOW to Love My Neighbor.”
