I just can’t keep this to myself any longer!
As this season comes to a close, there are a few SEC Teams that are a dumpster fire when it comes to coaches. Two, Florida and Tennessee have already acknowledge that fact and at least have stopped putting gas on the fire. Announced this evening on CBS Sports is the fact that Texas A&M will fire Kevin Sumlin immediately after the game with LSU this coming Saturday…win or lose.
And we’ve not even mentioned the hot mess that is the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Everyone knows, whether they admit it or not, that the SEC West is the complete dominant division in any conference in all of college football. And as of right now, the SEC East, is nothing more than an adopted step-child. Sure there’s Georgia…right up to the point that they run into a powerful Auburn team. Did I mention that Auburn is in the SEC West? We have to admit that the East needs help. Coaching help. The right coaching help that balances the power in the West.
So as we wind down to what will go down in history as one of the greatest coaching turnover rates ever in the SEC, I offer my strong suggestions as to ‘who should go where.’
First, let me just say that all common sense HAS to be thrown out. We have to look at this in a way that brings wins and excitement into our conference. Whether you curse my choices, or applaud my choices, just for one SEC minute stop and think just how much fun the SEC would have IF, these changes would be made.
First, Florida. Jim McElwain left a disaster. Period. Gone are the days of ‘dreading the swamp.’ The passion is gone. The control of the program is gone. There’s not even that big of a desire to win in Gainesville anymore. As much as I want Chip Kelly to come back to his senses and return to the collegiate sidelines, now that UCLA has opened up, the PAC12 is a MUCH better fit for him. My choice for the new Head Gator, (it really hurts me to say this, but…) is Lane Kiffin. He is already in the state of Florida. which that in and of itself speaks volumes about his recruiting territory. His family is there. He loves the SEC.
Imagine if Kiffin were to go to Florida. He has a strong charismatic personality that the media loves. He’s an excellent play caller. (Hello Alabama) Florida would score points again. It would no longer be ‘Kirby Smart and the rest of the East.’ He would be waiting thorn in Nick Saban’s side. And this crazy fool knows how to win. (See FAU).
Next, Tennessee. Why in the world did the powers that be in Knoxville leave Butch Jones this long? The Vols are a train wreck. So it is going to take a proven winner to come in and clean this mess up. It will take a strong personality to control the Rocky Top Gang. In my opinion, there is only one choice. And here’s a hint: It’s NOT Jon Gruden. The ONE GUY that can turn Tennessee around almost immediately is Urban Myer. Yes, I know I’ve lost my mind. But just think about it for a minute. Imagine what the East would look like with a Kirby Smart Georgia, Lane Kiffin as the Head Gator, and Urban returning to the SEC at Tennessee.
Can we say FUN?!
Urban Myer is an amazing coach! But he’s in the B1G. We’re talking the SEC here! If Urban Myer is ever to solidify his legacy in collegiate coaching, he HAS to return to the greatest conference in the country where his would teams compete on a week-in-week-out basis with the best in the land. NOT just in bowl games.
Who wouldn’t want to see a Nick Saban Alabama in the SEC Conference Final against an Urban Myer Tennessee squad. And that’s AFTER he beat out Lane and Kirby.
Now, on the the wild West.
Ol’ Miss is in need of a serious coach that focuses on the game, and would return the greatness back to Oxford. They only have to go just over an hour to get the right guy. University of Memphis’ Mike Norvell is hands down the best choice. My word, just look what he has accomplished with the Tigers. He already has a recruiting base in the area. He’s a proven winner. He has passion. And he loves the student athlete. This is Norvell’s time. And the Rebels are ready.
Oh, Arkansas. Ya’ll are something else. And not in a good way. I said 5 years ago that Bielema was nowhere the right fit. But nobody listen to me! Now, just look at the mess that on the hill. Bielema’s accomplishments…or should I say the lack thereof…is another confirmation that the B1G can’t hang with the boys in the south. With Jeff Long gone, let’s PLEASE bring this train into the station, load Bret up, and move on down the line. It’s time for the Hogs to get serious again about football. There is an INCREDIBLE fan base in The Natural State. And they deserve an INCREDIBLE Coach. I can only suggest one coach to be Boss Hog.
It’s time to get on the Gus Bus. It’s time for Malzahn to go home. It started on the hill, and it needs to return to the hill. Gus would be so electrifying in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks would no longer have to settle with 2 and 3 star recruits, and an occasional 4 here and there. I truly believe that with Malzahn in control, there would be a rethinking of approach in the West. And who knows, we might even see the return of Rhett Lashlee to the SEC sidelines.
With Gus moving to the Ozarks, Auburn is going to need someone to come in and calm things down. Someone who could give Nick Saban fits. Hello Les Miles. A proven winner, and a man who loves the development of the game as well as the development of his student athletes, Les is perfect for War Eagle. That grass-eating coach needs back on the field, and what better place than in Nick’s back yard.
Texas A&M, you guys slay me. The real problem is, Kevin Sumlin is a GREAT Coach. But in reality, it’s time to bring a fresh vision to the Aggies. I really want to see Tom Herman in the ‘home of the 6th man’. He really made a mistake by NOT coming to LSU. And trust me, he knows that.
But let’s be honest. Texas will always be Texas. But….Texas will NEVER be the SEC. Never. Imagine a guy like Tom Herman who obviously loves the state of Texas, understands and has a good handle on Texas recruiting, and can seriously coach his rear end off, at a school that can consistently complete in the West, and, could truly throw a monkey wrench in the perennial powerhouses like Alabama and LSU.
So think about this for just a second. Saban, Miles, Malzahn, Herman, Mullin, and an up-start Norvell all vying for conference supremacy. But that would only happen after going through a Smart, Myer or Kiffin team.
Admit it, this would be FUN to watch.
