Now that I’ve got your attention, hear me out first before you dismiss this as mere foolishness.

Do I understand just how ridiculous this sounds?  Yes I do.

Do I realize that the chances of hell freezing over are greater than this move actually happening?  You better believe it.

However….Just. Think. About. It.

First you must know that I am an adamant supporter of the LSU Tiger Football Program.  And to me, it just doesn’t get any better than SEC Football, especially the SEC West Division.  Saturdays in the fall for me consist of sermon wrap-up, massive amounts of coffee and as much SEC Football that I can find on the TV.

Which, can be sometimes difficult considering the fact that I live in the heart of Buckeyeland!  Yep, I’m a southern boy with a passion for southern school sports that is living just an hour and a half away from ‘The Shoe.’

For almost 10 years I have had to endure the ongoing farce that exists around me that fathoms that Big 10 Football can actually compare and compete with the SEC on a regular basis.  For the first couple of years, I would succumb to the arena of discussions with the Ohio locals.  However, conversations usually fade away when the final scores at the end of each Saturday roll in.

So having said that, I’ve had the opportunity to watch Urban Meyer in the SEC during his tenure with the Florida Gators from 2005 – 2010 and now with the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012 till today.  Let’s face facts.  Urban Meyer is one seriously incredible football coach.  Just look at his record at Ohio State:  today it stands at 59-5.  He left Florida with a 65-15 record.  Overall, his record currently stands at 163-28.  I would say that’s pretty doggone good.  Great even!

I would even say that Coach Meyer is one of the greatest football coaches ever!  (Which is huge for me to say, considering my love affair with SEC Football.)  Here in Ohioland, Coach Meyer definitely has ‘god-like’ status!

However, I am also a student of the game itself.  A ‘self-professed’ arm-chair college football analyst if you will.  And because of that, it’s easy for me to make statements such as ‘…one of the greatest football coaches ever!’

It’s true.

One of…

Here is where my hypothesis takes over.  Coach Meyer will always be included in any conversation anywhere concerning great coaches.  In fact, his name will always be found near the top of the list in every single one of those conversations.  However, there is always one name that always finds a way to rise above the name of Coach Urban Meyer in these discussions of great college football coaches.  It’s the same name that typically strikes fear in hearts of opposing coaches nationwide.

That name, is Nick Saban.

Whether you agree with that or not, the fact remains that Coach Saban is typically considered the top college football coach in the country.  And his team usually proves that each week during the Fall.

And as great as Coach Meyer is…and he is great…he will always, always come up second to Coach Saban.

And unless the football gods shine down on us, these two football giants will only face each other during the College Football Playoffs.  Then, and only then, the stars must align just right or even that by-chance meeting won’t even happen.

Let’s face the facts:  Alabama is NEVER going to schedule Ohio State during the regular season on a regular basis.  And vice-versa for Ohio State.

Never.

Unless there is a way for Urban Meyer and Nick Saban to face each other every year, these arm-chair conversations will always end up with the same result…Urban Meyer, second to Nick Saban.

So, is Nick Saban looking for a way to take over a Big 10 Football Program?

Is Coach Saban looking to leave the palace he reigns over in the SEC West?

HA!  That’s funny!

I’m not even going to pursue this train of thought for fear of death by laughter!

However, let’s flip that coin shall we?!

Knowing that Coach Meyer did have a successful campaign in the SEC with Florida, he understands what it’s like going to battle each and every week with those Southeastern Conference titans and, he has tasted the greatness and has basked in that glory.

Here in the Big 10, Urban Meyer and Ohio State reign supreme.

Literally.

Even this current football year, with all of its craziness, the Buckeyes are possibly positioning themselves to be in the College Football Playoff WITHOUT even winning the Big 10 Championship!  Urban Meyer has more than proved ever since his arrival that Big 10 Football is his house with his rules.

Coach Meyer has nothing left to prove.  He’s done it all.  Been there.  Done that.

Nothing left to prove…in the Big 10.

But, there’s a LOT to prove when you cross the Mason-Dixon.

That’s when the game changes.  That’s when one is begging to play the likes of a Maryland or a Rutgers when you’re facing a Georgia, or an Arkansas, Auburn or Texas A&M each and every week.  That’s not even mentioning the 7 headed beast that’s located in Tuscaloosa.

There is only one way that Urban Meyer can ever step out of the ‘Nick Saban Shadow’ and that is by beating him consistently year-in and year-out.  And the only way that can happen, is to go back to the Promised Land of the SEC where Alabama awaits every year on the schedule.

But not with just any SEC team.  It would have to be the one team, also in the SEC West, that historically has been a thorn in Alabama’s side.  That one team that is considered to possess the same level of talent, fan base, unmatched recruiting territory and winning tradition as that of the Tide.  It’s that one team that if ever there was a team that was going to beat Saban and Alabama, it’s this one.

And that team is located in Baton Rouge.

LSU is the one team that traditionally is the ‘x’ factor in the SEC West.  It’s common knowledge that the winner of the SEC West Division must go through Baton Rouge first before arriving in the Georgia Dome for the SEC Conference Title.

LSU is arguably a Top 5 Power 5 school where other college coaches dream of going.  And right now, LSU has a coaching vacancy.

Everybody in the western hemisphere knew that Les Miles’ days were numbered given the fiasco that took place at the end of last season.  Thankfully, Coach Orgeron has battened down the hatches and has made great use of the NFL-type talent that’s on the team.  Since Coach O has taken over as Interim, he’s won every game…every game but one.  And that game was against…you guessed it…Alabama.

LSU needs a ‘top shelf’ coach that has a personally vested interest in the program and its tradition.  The Tigers need a coach that won’t settle for claiming victories over everyone except the Crimson Tide.  LSU needs a coach that salivates at the thought of battling Nick Saban every year.  LSU needs a warrior.  And that warrior, is Urban Meyer.

It’s a win-win for both the LSU football program, and for Coach Meyer.

Just imagine how good Coach Meyer will look in purple and gold.

Oh, and as an added benefit, Coach Meyer can wreck havoc again each year on his old pal, Coach Bret Bielima.
