SWORD CollageRevelation 19:15 – “Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations…”

The passage of Scripture from Revelation 19:11 – 20:3 has to be one of the most powerful passages in all of the Bible.  The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is going to be a glorious event likened to lightning and will be witnessed by both believers and unbelievers alike!

This passage of Scripture…The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is THE focal point of the entire Book of Revelation!  The return of Christ to this earth is also a constant theme of Scripture!

There are 1845 references in the Bible to the Second Coming, including 318 in the New Testament.  There are no less than 17 Old Testament books emphasize His return, while 7 out of 10 chapters in the New Testament refer to this earth-shattering event.

Now, let’s talk about this sword for a minute!

In Genesis Chapter 1, we find God literally ‘SPOKE’ the world into existence.

Spoke.

Words, from the very mouth of God.

Eight times, we find the phrase in Genesis Chapter 1, ‘God said’.

So, from nothing, came everything…simply by God SPEAKING them into reality.

That’s a glimpse of how powerful God’s WORD is.

Here in this passage in Revelation 19:15, we see what is coming out of Jesus’ mouth is a SWORD.

Now, check out Ephesians 6:17.  Here, Paul is describing the Armor of God…literally piece by piece.  And in Verse 17…”And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”

Here, Scripture is tying together ‘sword’ and ‘the word of God.’

Interesting.

Now, head on over to the Book of Hebrews.  In Hebrews 4:12 we read, For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Again, an amazing passage that describes the power, precision and intensity of God’s Word as a ‘sword.’

Now let’s put this altogether.

In Genesis we see God’s Word as ‘all powerful’ and ‘creative.’  In Ephesians, we see God’s Word as a ‘sword’…not only as “A” weapon, but “THE” Weapon in the Armor of God.  And in Hebrews we get to the nitty-gritty as to what God’s Word is all about.

Key Words in this passage in Hebrews:  ‘thoughts and intents’

Something we have to understand, and that is the fact that we don’t actually have to SAY something or DO something to make it a sin.

If we have THOUGHT the action or words…or have the INTENTIONS of doing so, it’s just as though we actually DID IT!

God’s Word ‘REVEALS’ sin.  The deeper we go in God’s Word, the more ‘layers’ of our life is peeled back revealing our deepest, darkest secrets.

When we immerse ourselves into God’s Word, we cannot help but to be brought face-to-face with our sin!  This is one of the biggest reasons that Christians don’t want to read their Bible, is because it reveals the sins of the flesh!

It’s like literally allowing God to take the brightest flashlight known to man, and to dive into the deepest crevasses of our lives, giving Him permission to uncover EVERYTHING in our lives that is contrary to His Will, then to use His Word as a ‘scalpel’…look back at that Verse in Hebrews…as a ‘scalpel’ to remove all of the sin and darkness inside.

SIN does not like the Light!  It loves the cover of darkness.

When we put this all together, from Genesis to Revelation, when we read Revelation 19:15 and we see that “out of His mouth goes a sharp sword…”, let us understand that this is literally the Word of God…so powerful that it is all He needs when He strikes the nations with it.

Think about it like this:  God’s Word is SO powerful, that it was all God needed to create the world.  And it is also all God needs to destroy evil and the armies of the world at His Second Coming.  And if we allow it, God’s Word will do a miraculous work in each of us, helping us to reveal and remove sin and darkness in our lives.

What are you waiting on? You got some reading to do!
